The Nebraska Academy of Sciences is proud to provide the opportunity to members and to the public to 'get into the field' with our NAS Field Trips.  Recent Past trips have included:

The NAS 2025 Geology Field Trip to AshFall Fossil Beds State Historical Park
Science, Scenery and Good company.  These are the goals of the 2025 NAS Geology Field Trip to Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park and other geological sites. Join the expedition that will explore the fossil beds of Ashfall, the Blacktail Creek Ash and Yellowstone Hot Spot history, and explore deposits of the Cretaceous North American interior Seaway. Transportation from Lincoln and Omaha will be provided, as well as two lunches, breakfast, and dinner. We will be camping one night at a location TBD.  Meet and network with like-minded science lovers, science teachers, students, geologists, and enjoy campfire discussions in the woods!  Details are still in the works, but sign up early to ensure your place on this fantastic NAS Adventure!



In 2024 NAS took a group of Explorers to central and western Nebraska  to focus on the geological history of Nebraska's rivers, the climate history of Nebraska's windblown sediments-sandhill sands and loess, as well as learning about westward expansion along the Platte River and other points of interest.  The science lead for this trip was Dr. Paul Hansen of the UNL School of Natural Resources.



In 2023 Dr. David Harwood served as the Scientific Lead for the expedition that went to Indian Cave in southeast Nebraska.  The group traveled to four states, exploring 300+ million years of geological time.  

The 2026 Crane Migration Experience-Saturday, March 14th  (
This trip has been offered for the last three years) 

One of the greatest wildlife spectacles in North America, this gatering of crances is the largest in the world.  Back by popular demand, NAS is proud to partner with UNK Ornithologists to present the 2026 great Crane Migration Experience.  
Tentative Schedule:

1:00 p.m.     Bus departs Lincoln for Rowe Sanctuary
3:00 p.m.    Field tour of Prairie Habitat
4:00 p.m.   Talks on Cranes with UNK Ornithologists
5:00 p.m.   Dinner (included in your registration)
6:00 p.m.  Rowe Sanctuary Program and Wildlife Viewing from a Blind on the North Platte River
9:00 p.m.    Depart Rowe for Lincoln
11:00 p.m.    Arrive back in Lincoln
