Nebraska Wesleyan University

The Nebraska Academy of Sciences held its 121st Annual Meeting April 15, 2011 and celebrated its 131st Anniversary Year at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Over 400 people attended the collegiate research presentations while over 130 Junior Academy students, teachers, and parents attended the Nebraska Junior Academy of Sciences state competition.

The 2011 Maiben lecture was presented by Dr. Erin Flynn. She is currently the Nocturnal Manager at the Henry Doorly Zoo. Her lecture was titled "A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Conservation Research."

Erin Flynn is a recent Ph.D. graduate from the University of Tasmania, Australia and an emerging researcher.  She spent the last 4.5 years conducting remote conservation-based fieldwork in Tasmania, Australia, where she applied a multi-disciplinary approach to study impacts of forest harvest on the brushtail possum. She holds a B.Sc. in Zoology and Biology (Cum Laude) from Colorado State University (2006) and a Ph.D. in Conservation and Reproductive Biology from the University of Tasmania, Australia (2011).  Dr. Flynn was an Air Force brat who moved frequently across the U.S. during her childhood, and graduated from Bellevue West High School in Bellevue, NE. While in high school, she participated in the Young Scholars Program at the University of California, Davis, where she studied endocrine disruptors in mice. At Colorado State University (2002-2006), she researched impacts of high altitude on mid-gestation development and post-natal consequences in rats and sheep. She has been a veterinary technician, zookeeper, wildlife rehabilitator, venomous snake handler, and teacher while earning her degrees.
